How to store an e-bike battery in winter
In short: Take your e-bike's battery out over the winter and store it somewhere dry, frost-free and at room temperature – neither full nor empty, but partly charged. Many manufacturers recommend a medium charge level; what applies to your battery exactly is stated in the user manual. That information always takes priority over general tips.
Why does the battery need extra attention in winter?
E-bikes almost always use lithium-ion batteries. They dislike both severe cold and high heat, and they age faster if they sit fully charged or completely empty for a long time. Over the winter months a bike often stands unused for weeks – and that is exactly when it is decided how much capacity the battery will still have in spring. The battery is also usually the most expensive single part of an e-bike, so the care is worth it.
How do I store my e-bike battery properly?
- Read the manual: Check the user manual or the manufacturer's website for the recommended charge level and storage temperature.
- Remove the battery: Take the battery out of the bike, even if the bike is kept indoors. That way it is disconnected from the system and you can store it deliberately.
- Set the charge level: Charge or discharge it to the recommended value. Many manufacturers suggest a medium range, roughly half on the charge indicator.
- Check the contacts: Keep the contacts clean and dry, wiping them with a dry cloth if needed.
- Choose the right place: Dry, frost-free, out of direct sunlight and not right next to a radiator. An ordinary living space is usually a good fit.
- Check occasionally: Look at the charge indicator every few weeks. If the level has dropped noticeably, top it up briefly – again only to the recommended range.
Where is the right place for the battery?
| Place | Suitability | What to watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Living space, storage room | good | not next to a radiator or in blazing sun |
| Heated cellar | usually good | check the humidity |
| Unheated cellar | limited | can be damp and cool, frost possible |
| Garage, garden shed | not really | frost and temperature fluctuations |
| In the bike, outdoors | not recommended | cold, wet, theft |
Place the battery on a solid, non-flammable surface, out of reach of children and not right next to easily flammable items. With an intact battery this is purely a precaution, but it costs nothing.
Charging in winter: what applies?
Charge the battery at room temperature. If it comes in from the cold after a ride, let it sit somewhere warm for a while before you connect the charger. Use the original charger or one approved by the manufacturer. A damaged, swollen or unusually hot battery should no longer go on the charger – take it to a specialist dealer instead.
If you also ride in winter: ideally insert the battery just before the ride and take it back inside with you afterwards. In the cold the range drops noticeably – that is normal and not a defect.
And the e-bike itself?
The bike needs the same steps as any other bicycle: clean it, dry it, oil the chain, pump up the tyres. You will find the detailed checklist in our guide How to store your bike properly in winter. How to protect the bike from theft is covered in How to store your bike safe from theft.
Will an e-bike fit on a wooden wall mount?
To be honest: usually not. Typical e-bikes weigh around 20–28 kg, while our mounts are designed for about 20 kg (Henry and Max about 18 kg). For heavy e-bikes, step-through bikes and trapeze frames without a top tube, we recommend a sturdy floor stand or a metal solution.
There are, however, light e-bikes with a diamond frame, such as some e-road bikes or urban models. If your bike weighs less than 20 kg without the battery and has a continuous top tube, a wooden mount like Gustav or Johannes may fit – just remove the battery first. If in doubt, weigh the bike with a luggage scale or on your bathroom scales (once with and once without the bike). You can check the dimensions in the Fitting Guide. Frequently asked questions
Can I store my e-bike battery in the cellar?
Only if the cellar is dry and frost-free. Many cellars are too cool or too damp in winter. A living space is usually the safer choice.
Should I fully charge the battery before winter?
Usually not. Many manufacturers recommend a medium charge level for longer breaks. The information in your user manual is what counts.
How often should I recharge the battery in winter?
Check the charge indicator every few weeks. If the level has dropped noticeably, top it up briefly. A fully discharged battery can be damaged.
Can I leave the battery in the e-bike if the bike is kept indoors?
Technically often yes, but removing it is still recommended. That way you have better control over the charge level and storage location, and the bike is lighter if you want to hang it up.
