Hanging a bike in your flat: 6 options compared
In short: The most space-saving and attractive way to hang a bike in your flat is horizontally on a wall mount that holds the top tube. This works for road bikes, gravel bikes, fixies and city bikes with a diamond frame up to around 20 kg. For heavy e-bikes, step-through frames or very low rooms, floor stands or ceiling lifts are the better choice.
Why your bike belongs in your flat
Cellars, back yards and hallways have three problems: the bike is in the way, it's exposed to damp and cold, and it's easier to steal there than within your own four walls. In your flat it's dry and safe – and a good bike is an eye-catcher. The only question is: how, without it getting in the way?
The 6 options compared
| Solution | Space required | Suitable for | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horizontal wall mount (on the top tube) | very little, approx. 35 cm depth from the wall | road bike, gravel, fixie, city bike with diamond frame | like a picture on the wall |
| Vertical wall mount (on the front wheel) | narrow, but needs height | most bikes incl. MTB | functional |
| Simple wall hooks | very little | light bikes | plain |
| Floor stand / leaning stand | a lot, bike stands in the room | all bikes, including e-bikes | neutral |
| Ceiling lift | none on the floor | high-ceilinged rooms, garages | more workshop-like |
| Bike shelf / furniture | medium | road bike, city bike | homely |
Which solution suits which bike?
- Road bike, gravel bike, fixie, single speed: Ideal for a horizontal wall mount. These bikes are light and the top tube is straight or slightly sloping – they hang securely and look best on the wall. Find out more in our guide Hanging a road bike on the wall.
- Trekking and city bikes with a diamond frame: Also work horizontally, as long as the bike isn't heavier than the mount can carry and the handlebars aren't too wide.
- Mountain bike: Steeply sloping top tubes and wide handlebars make the horizontal solution trickier. Check the handlebar width and frame shape – or choose a vertical mount.
- Step-through, mixte frame, cargo bike: No continuous top tube – a floor stand is the safe choice here.
- E-bike: Usually too heavy for wooden wall mounts. The exception is light models under 20 kg with a diamond frame. Remove the battery before hanging.
What to look for when buying a wall mount
- Load capacity: Weigh your bike. The mount should carry more than your bike weighs.
- Handlebar width: With horizontal mounts, the handlebars need room along the wall. Our mounts are designed for handlebars up to approx. 60 cm; wider handlebars turn inwards, but the bike still holds.
- Wall type: Concrete and solid brick are no problem. For plasterboard or timber stud walls you need suitable wall plugs or a stud in the wall. Details in our mounting guide.
- Frame protection: Felt, cork or leather on the contact surface protects the paintwork.
- Added value: A shelf or compartment turns the mount into furniture – handy for your helmet, keys and lock.
Our recommendation
We founded Bicycledudes in 2016 because we had a space problem ourselves in an old-building flat. Today we make our bike wall mounts from oak and birch to order in a carpentry workshop – with a shelf, with a hidden storage compartment or simply as 8-sided stacks. You'll find all models compared here: Wooden bike wall mounts.
Frequently asked questions
Can you hang any bike on the wall?
No. Horizontal wall mounts need a continuous top tube and a weight within the load capacity. Step-through frames and heavy e-bikes are better off in a floor stand.
How much space does a bike need on the wall?
Horizontally, roughly the length of the bike (around 170–180 cm) in width and – depending on the mount – about 35 cm depth from the wall, plus room for the handlebars.
Is a bike on the wall safer from theft?
In your flat, the bike is much better protected than in the yard or cellar. The mount itself isn't a lock – the protection comes from the location.
Does hanging damage the bike?
No. Frames are built for much higher loads. What matters is a soft contact surface so the paintwork doesn't get scratched.
