Vorderrad an der Wand fixieren – so bleibt das Rad gerade - Bicycledudes

Keeping the front wheel straight on the wall

In short: When a bike hangs horizontally on the wall, the front wheel tends to turn, because the handlebar touches the wall or the weight isn't exactly centred. The fix is a wheel strap that connects the front wheel to the frame – ours is a felt strap for €10 that keeps the wheel straight. It also helps to shift the chain onto the big chainring and wipe the tyre before hanging the bike up.

Why does the front wheel turn when the bike is on the wall?

The front wheel turns freely with the handlebar. When the bike hangs horizontally, two things come into play:

  • The handlebar: If it is wider than the distance to the wall, one end hits the wall and pushes the front wheel to the side. With handlebars over about 60 cm, as on many mountain bikes, this almost always happens.
  • Gravity: Even with a narrow handlebar, the front wheel often tilts slightly, because the weight of the handlebar and wheel isn't exactly above the steering axis.

This is not a safety issue: the bike rests on its top tube and stays put even with the front wheel turned. It's about looks and about your wall.

What problems does it cause?

  1. The bike looks crooked. If you deliberately hang your bike on the wall like a picture, a twisted front wheel will bother you.
  2. The tyre touches the wall. Rubber tends to leave dark scuff marks on light-coloured walls, especially with road dirt on it.
  3. The handlebar presses against the wall. Grips and brake levers can leave marks.
  4. The bike moves when you walk past. A freely turning front wheel swings if you brush against it.

How do I keep the front wheel in place?

The simplest solution is to connect the front wheel to the frame, usually the down tube. That way the front wheel can no longer turn. There are several ways to do this:

Solution Advantage Disadvantage
Felt strap / wheel strap soft, gentle on paintwork and rim, looks tidy has to be removed before every ride
Velcro strap cheap, quick Velcro can snag on paintwork or clothing, looks makeshift
Bungee cord available everywhere hooks can scratch paintwork, looks cluttered
Turning the handlebar to fit costs nothing only holds as long as nobody touches the bike

What does our felt wheel strap do?

We have a small accessory for exactly this problem: Fred and Barni are felt wheel straps for €10 each. The felt strap goes around the front wheel and down tube and keeps the wheel straight. The felt is soft, so it's gentle on paintwork and rim. Read more about the idea behind our bike wall mount from the carpentry workshop on our homepage.

The standard length is 40 cm, which fits many frames and tyre widths. If you need a longer version because of a chunky frame or wide tyres, just ask us – it's available on request.

The strap works with any horizontal mount, and especially well with our wooden mounts such as Gustav. It won't, however, stop a very wide handlebar from touching the wall – the bike will hang straight, but the handlebar will still touch the wall. And our mounts are still designed for bikes with a top tube up to about 20 kg; they are not intended for step-through frames or heavy e-bikes.

What other tricks help?

  • Chain on the big chainring: Shift onto the big chainring at the front before you hang the bike up. That keeps the chain taut, so it doesn't sag or smear your trousers or the wall.
  • Wipe the tyres: Run a damp cloth over the tread before the bike goes on the wall. Less dirt, fewer marks.
  • Position the cranks: Turn the cranks so the pedal on the wall side doesn't hit the wall – usually horizontal.
  • Check the clearance: Hold the bike up as a test before drilling to see whether the handlebar and pedal stay clear. More on this in our mounting guide.
  • Wall protection: Where the handlebar still touches the wall, a small felt pad or a clear protective film on the wall helps.

On road bikes with drop bars, the wheel turning is usually less of an issue – see Hanging a road bike on the wall. We compare other types of mount in Swivel wall mount or pedal mount.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a problem if the front wheel turns on the wall?

Not for safety – the bike still rests securely on its top tube. It's about looks and about keeping the tyre and handlebar from marking the wall.

Does the felt wheel strap fit every bike?

The 40 cm standard version fits many bikes. With thick frame tubes or wide tyres it can be a tight fit – a longer version is available on request.

Do I have to remove the strap before every ride?

Yes, otherwise you can't steer. It only takes a few seconds; you can simply leave the strap lying on the mount.

How do I get tyre marks off the wall?

On washable paint, a damp cloth or a magic eraser often works – go gently and test on an inconspicuous spot first. It's better to avoid contact in the first place.
