What height for a bike wall mount? – Bicycledudes

What height for a bike wall mount?

In short: There is no fixed standard height for bike wall mounts – the right height depends on your bike and your body. Rule of thumb: as low as possible, but high enough for both wheels to hang freely with clearance above the skirting board or radiator. The most reliable way to find the height is to hold the bike against the wall once and mark the underside of the top tube.

Why is there no standard height?

A children's bike, a road bike in frame size 54 and a trekking bike in size 60 have completely different distances between the top tube and the bottom of the tyres. Then there's who hangs the bike up: what's comfortable for a tall person may already be too high for a shorter one. A blanket figure in centimetres would therefore be a rough guide at best. It's better to measure the height on your own bike – it takes five minutes.

What determines the right height?

Factor Effect on the height What to watch out for
Frame size and wheels larger top tube–tyre distance = mount higher measure on the bike, don't guess
Sloping top tube bike hangs at an angle, lowest tyre determines the height choose the contact point on the top tube
Skirting board, sockets tyre needs clearance above them allow a few centimetres
Radiator bike shouldn't hang in the heat better choose another spot on the wall
Your height and strength the higher, the harder the lifting top tube below shoulder height if possible
Furniture underneath bike must fit above sideboard or bench furniture height plus clearance

How to measure the height on your own bike

  1. Prepare: Shift the chain onto the large chainring, set the cranks horizontal, give the tyres a quick wipe. It's easier with two people.
  2. Hold the bike up: Hold the bike horizontally against the wall, exactly as it will hang later.
  3. Check the clearance: Both wheels should hang freely. Leave a few centimetres below the lowest tyre, more if there's a skirting board or radiator.
  4. Mark: Use a pencil to mark the underside of the top tube where the mount should carry it – usually roughly in the middle of the top tube.
  5. Convert to the mount: Depending on the model, the contact point isn't at the top edge of the mount. The exact dimensions and drilling distances are in the Fitting Guide.
  6. Test lift: Lift the bike again – can you bring it to this height comfortably and under control? Better a little lower than too high.

Ergonomics: how high is still comfortable?

You might lift your bike twice a day – for years. So besides space, how easy it is to hang up matters too. Resting the top tube below shoulder height has proven itself. That way you can grip the bike with both hands on the handlebars and saddle or top tube without stretching your arms. Especially with heavier city bikes, typically 13–18 kg, this makes a noticeable difference. With a road bike of 7–10 kg it can be a little higher.

If several people share a bike or a spot, set the height for the shorter person. And if you notice you have to swing the bike up every time, the mount is too high.

Special situations

  • Above a piece of furniture: Measure the furniture height, add a few centimetres of clearance and check whether the resulting height is still comfortable. A low sideboard is usually fine, a desk is often already too high.
  • Two bikes one above the other: The lower bike determines the height of the upper one. More in How to hang two bikes on one wall.
  • Sloping ceiling: Saddle and handlebars must not hit the slope – sometimes the mount then has to go lower than ideal.
  • Cables and pipes: Once the height is decided, check the area with a cable detector. Cables often run horizontally next to sockets and switches.

Which bikes do our mounts fit?

Our mounts hold the bike by the top tube – so you set the height via the mounting position. That works for bikes with a diamond frame up to about 20 kg (Max and Henry about 18 kg). With models with a shelf like Franz-Josef, you also use the surface on top: make sure you can still reach it easily at the chosen height. Our installation guide describes the installation itself. Our mounts are not intended for e-bikes over 20 kg or bikes without a top tube.

Frequently asked questions

How high do you hang a bike on the wall?

As low as possible, but with both wheels clear of the floor and above any skirting board or radiator. The exact height depends on your bike – hold it against the wall once and mark the underside of the top tube.

How much clearance should the bike have from the floor?

A few centimetres below the lowest tyre are enough. More if there are skirting boards, radiators or furniture underneath.

Can you mount the holder too high?

Yes. Hanging the bike up then becomes tiring and unsafe. If you have to swing it up, the mount is too high.

Where on the top tube should the mount carry the bike?

Usually roughly in the middle, so the bike hangs balanced. If there are cables along the top tube, choose the contact point so they don't get pinched.
