Hanging an e-bike on the wall: is it possible?
In short: You can hang an e-bike on the wall – but only with a mount designed for the weight and a wall that can carry it. Typical e-bikes weigh around 20–28 kg, considerably more than a normal bike. Take the battery out first, check the load capacity carefully and think honestly about whether a floor stand or a lift might be more practical day to day.
How heavy is an e-bike, actually?
Weight is the key question before you even think about a wall mount. As a rough rule of thumb:
| Bike type | Typical weight | Wall mounting |
|---|---|---|
| Road bike | around 7–10 kg | straightforward |
| City bike / trekking bike | around 13–18 kg | quite possible |
| Light e-bike (e.g. e-road bike, e-gravel) | around 12–18 kg | often possible |
| E-trekking / e-city | around 22–28 kg | only with a heavy-duty mount |
| E-MTB / e-cargo bike | around 23–30 kg and more | floor or lift is better |
It's best to weigh your bike yourself: stand on a bathroom scale holding the bike and subtract your own weight. It takes a minute and is more accurate than any manufacturer's figure, because mudguards, pannier racks and locks are often not included.
Battery out – why it matters so much
An e-bike battery typically weighs around 2.5–4 kg. If you take it out before hanging the bike, the bike becomes noticeably lighter and easier to lift. Besides, it's better to charge the battery separately from the bike and at room temperature anyway. Many manufacturers advise against storing it in cold rooms for long periods – if in doubt, check the user manual.
On some models the battery is built into the frame and can only be removed with tools. In that case, reckon with the full weight when hanging the bike.
What does the wall need to withstand?
An e-bike doesn't load the mount with its weight alone. Hanging it up and taking it down creates additional forces, especially if the bike is put in with momentum. So plan in a margin:
- Solid walls made of concrete, solid brick or sand-lime brick are well suited with suitable wall plugs.
- Perforated brick and aerated concrete need special wall plugs – ask specifically at the DIY store.
- Plasterboard and drywall are tricky for heavy e-bikes. If at all, then only fixed into the stud frame or with heavy-duty cavity plugs.
- Cables and pipes: Before drilling, use a detector to check where electrical cables and water pipes run.

What alternatives are there for heavy e-bikes?
For e-bikes of 25 kg and more, the wall is often not the most convenient solution, even if it could carry the weight. Lifting a bike that size to shoulder height every day is hard work. These options are often more practical day to day:
- Floor stand: The bike stays on the floor and nothing needs lifting. Ideal for hallways, cellars or garages.
- Ceiling lift with pulley: The bike is pulled up by a rope. Useful in garages and cellars with a load-bearing ceiling. More on this in our guide Hanging a bike from the ceiling.
- Metal wall mount with high load capacity: There are mounts designed for around 30 kg and more. They are functional rather than beautiful, but made for heavy bikes.
- Vertical hook with rear wheel support: Saves space, but requires you to stand the bike on end – with the weight of an e-bike, that's not for everyone.

Does a Bicycledudes mount fit my e-bike?
We want to be honest here: our wooden mounts are designed for bikes up to around 20 kg, the Henry and Max models for around 18 kg. Most e-trekking, e-city and e-mountain bikes are heavier than that – for these we recommend a floor stand or a metal mount with a higher load capacity.
It's a different story for light e-bikes, such as e-road bikes or e-gravel bikes with a slim frame. If your bike weighs under 20 kg without the battery and has a continuous top tube, a wooden frame such as Gustav or a mount with a shelf such as Johannes may fit. You'll find the dimensions for the top tube and handlebars in the Fitting Guide. If you're unsure, send us a photo of your bike – we'd rather honestly say no than have something that doesn't hold. Frequently asked questions
How many kilos does a wall mount for an e-bike need to carry?
The load capacity should be above the actual weight of your bike, ideally with a few kilos in reserve. For typical e-bikes of 20–28 kg, that means mounts rated for around 30 kg or more.
Can I hang an e-bike on a plasterboard wall?
We advise against it for heavy e-bikes. If there's no other way, the mount should be screwed into the stud frame. If in doubt, a floor stand is the safer choice.
Does the battery have to come out when hanging the bike?
Not necessarily, but it makes sense: the bike becomes lighter and you can charge and store the battery at room temperature.
Can you hang an e-bike vertically?
Many manufacturers consider this unproblematic. With hydraulic brakes and motor electronics, though, it's worth checking the manufacturer's information. Read more in Does hanging a bike damage it?
