Bike in your home: interior ideas
In short: A bike becomes part of your interior when it gets a deliberately chosen spot: horizontal on a calm wall, with some space around it, well lit and ideally on a mount that doubles as a shelf or storage. Living rooms, hallways and home offices are particularly well suited. What matters is that the colours and materials of bike and mount suit the room.
When does a bike look like decor rather than just parked?
A bike leaning against the wall looks like a temporary solution. A bike hanging horizontally at eye level with free wall around it, on the other hand, looks like a picture or a design object. Three things make the difference: a fixed spot, a clear frame and tidy surroundings. Tangled cables, shoes and bags right below it quickly take away the effect.
How to find the right solution for your bike in general is explained in our guide Hanging a bike in your home. This one is about the design.
Which room works for what?
| Room | Strengths | Design idea |
|---|---|---|
| Living room | large, calm walls; the bike gets seen | above the sofa or sideboard, with a spotlight or wall light |
| Hallway | short distances, bike is quickly to hand | mount with shelf as a spot for keys and helmet |
| Home office | personal space, often with a favourite bike | next to the desk, with maps or photos of rides above it |
| Bedroom | often a free wall opposite the bed | simple mount, calm colours, no clutter |
| Kitchen / dining area | an option in open-plan layouts | only at a distance from cooker and sink |
Living room: the bike as the centrepiece
The living room gives a bike the biggest stage. Choose a wall without much competition – no picture gallery right next to it, no packed bookcase. Above a low sideboard, the bike hangs at a comfortable height, and the furniture creates distance from the walkway. Make sure the bike stays easy to reach; if you use it every day, you don't want to move decorations every time. How much space you need is covered in How much space does a bike need on the wall?
Hallway and home office: function meets design
In the hallway, everyday life is what counts: bike in, helmet down, keys away. A mount with a shelf takes on the role of a key rack, and a storage compartment holds lights, lock and gloves. Tips for narrow hallways can be found in Bike in the hallway: park it or hang it?
In the home office, things can get more personal. This is often where the road bike for weekend rides hangs – together with race numbers, a framed route map or photos. The result is a small wall that tells something about you.
Light, colour and material
- Light: An adjustable spotlight or a wall light to the side above the bike shows off the frame and wheels. Indirect light from below casts striking shadows of the spokes on the wall.
- Wall colour: A dark bike looks graphic against a light wall, a light or colourful bike calmer against a muted wall. A painted area behind the bike works like a picture mount.
- Match the wood tone: Natural oak goes with warm wooden floors and furniture, white birch with light, Scandinavian-style rooms.
- Look after the bike: Clean tyres, a shiny frame, the chain tensioned on the large chainring – on the wall, every detail shows.
- Align the front wheel: A felt wheel strap keeps the front wheel straight. It looks tidier and protects the wall.
Making good use of the shelf and compartment
A mount with a shelf or compartment turns the bike spot into a small piece of furniture. A few ideas for what fits there nicely:
- Helmet, gloves and hat – ready for the next ride.
- Keys, headphones and wallet, if the mount hangs in the hallway.
- Bike lights and charging cables in the compartment, so nothing lies around.
- A small plant, a candle in a jar or a favourite book in the living room.
- Puncture repair kit, mini pump and multitool – neatly stored, quickly found.
Remember that everything on the shelf adds to the weight of the bike.
Which Bicycledudes mounts suit which style?
If you like it minimal, go for Gustav in natural birch. For hallways and home offices with a shelf, Johannes in oak is ideal, winner of the German Design Award 2019. If you'd rather store things away than display them, choose Clemens with flap and storage compartment. All of them hold bikes with a top tube up to about 20 kg. They are not intended for e-bikes over 20 kg or step-through bikes – in that case a well-placed floor stand is the better choice. You can see what makes our bike wall mount special on our homepage.
Frequently asked questions
Can you hang a bike on the wall as decor?
Yes. Horizontal on a calm wall, well lit and with some distance from other objects, a bike looks like a wall piece – and is still ready to ride.
Does a bike fit in the living room?
Yes, if you have just under two metres of free wall and the walkway in front stays clear. Above a sideboard, the bike is easy to reach and shown off at the same time.
How do you light a bike on the wall?
With an adjustable spotlight or a wall light to the side above it. Warm white light suits wood, indirect light from below emphasises the spokes.
Does the wall behind the bike get dirty?
Hardly, if the tyres are wiped before hanging the bike up and the front wheel is kept straight with a wheel strap.
