Hanging bikes in the garage to save space

In short: In the garage, you save the most space when bikes hang on the wall or from the ceiling instead of standing on the floor. Vertical wall hooks take up little width, and ceiling lifts make use of the space above the car. Allow enough distance from the car so that doors, mirrors and paintwork don't get damaged.

How much space does a bike need in the garage?

A standard single garage is typically around 2.50–3 m wide and 5–6 m long. A car takes up almost all of that. A bike is about 170–190 cm long, and the handlebar typically around 40–80 cm wide. Depending on how you hang it, it needs different amounts of space:

Mounting Width on the wall Depth into the room Suitable for
Horizontal on the wall about the bike's length about half the handlebar width long side wall, one or two bikes
Vertical on the wall about the handlebar width about the bike's length end wall in front of the car, several bikes
Vertical, staggered about 30–40 cm per bike about the bike's length many bikes on little wall width
Ceiling (lift or hooks) none none, needs height seasonal bikes, space above the car
Floor stand about the handlebar width about the bike's length heavy e-bikes, daily use

Wall or ceiling: which is better?

The wall is the best choice for bikes you use often. You take the bike down in one move, without a pulley or ladder. The end wall in front of the bonnet is particularly practical: there's usually more space there than you'd think, because the car rarely drives right up to the wall.

The ceiling is worthwhile for bikes that stand unused for longer, such as the road bike in winter or children's bikes that aren't needed right now. With a pulley lift, you don't have to lift anything overhead. A load-bearing ceiling is a must. More on this in the guide Hanging a bike from the ceiling.

Storing several bikes in the garage

In a family, four or five bikes add up quickly. These tips help:

  1. Hang them vertically and staggered: Mount the hooks alternately higher and lower. That way the handlebars don't get in each other's way and you only need about 30–40 cm of wall width per bike.
  2. Sort by use: Everyday bikes at the front and low down, seasonal bikes at the back or on the ceiling.
  3. Hang children's bikes low: Then children can get their bike out themselves without an adult having to help.
  4. E-bikes on the floor: Heavy bikes, typically 20–28 kg, are best kept in a floor stand, close to a power socket.
  5. Think about accessories: Helmets, pump and locks need a fixed place, otherwise they end up on the floor.

Distance from the car: keeping everything intact

A bike banging against a car door is doubly annoying. So check before drilling:

  • Open the doors: Park the car, open all doors fully and mark how far they open. No bike should hang there.
  • Mirrors and bonnet: With vertical hooks on the end wall, the bonnet must fit underneath the rear wheel.
  • Garage door: With up-and-over and sectional doors, the door runs along under the ceiling. Don't place ceiling lifts in this area.
  • Parking aid: A tennis ball on a string or a stop on the floor helps you always park in the same spot.
  • Pedals: Turn the pedals so they don't point towards the car.

The usual rules apply for installation: cable detector, spirit level, wall plugs to suit the wall. Details in the guide Installing a bike wall mount.

Wood in the garage – does that work?

To be honest: for a typical garage, simple metal hooks are often the more pragmatic choice. They're cheap, hard-wearing and can hold heavy e-bikes too. Our wooden mounts are mainly intended for living areas, where the bike is on show.

But there are exceptions: if your garage doubles as a workshop, hobby room or entrance area, a wooden mount can display your road bike or gravel bike neatly. Mounts with a storage compartment like Clemens hold your lock and gloves, while simple stacks like Max take up hardly any space. Make sure the garage is dry, and keep the limits in mind: load capacity around 20 kg, around 18 kg for Henry and Max, and the top tube must rest horizontally. You'll find a comparison in Wood or metal. Our homepage gives you an overview of our oak and birch bike wall mount range.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fit four bikes into a single garage?

Ideally vertically and staggered on the end wall in front of the car, or two bikes on the wall and two on the ceiling.

How much distance should there be between bike and car?

Enough for all doors to open fully and for you to walk past comfortably. As a rule of thumb, around 50–70 cm next to the driver's door.

Can I hang an e-bike in the garage?

Yes, with a mount or lift designed for the weight. A floor stand is often more convenient. More on this in Hanging an e-bike on the wall.

Does the cold in the garage damage the bike?

Usually not the bike itself; moisture is more of an issue. It's better to store e-bike batteries indoors in winter.
