Hanging a ladies' bike or step-through bike

In short: Ladies' bikes and step-through bikes can be hung up, but not in every mount. Because the top tube is missing or sits very low, classic horizontal wall mounts usually don't work. Good options are vertical hooks for the front wheel, floor stands or a frame adapter bar that mimics a top tube.

Why is a step-through bike difficult to hang?

Most wall mounts assume that the bike rests horizontally on its top tube. On a step-through, wave or mixte-style frame, this tube either doesn't exist or runs so low and at such an angle that the bike has no stable support. It would tip over or slip right out of the mount.

Then there's the weight: ladies' bikes and step-through city bikes typically weigh around 15–20 kg, often at the upper end with a basket, rack and hub dynamo. As an e-bike, that quickly becomes 25 kg or more.

What frame shapes are there?

Frame shape Feature Horizontal on the wall?
Diamond frame continuous top tube yes, usually no problem
Trapeze frame steeply sloping top tube, second tube parallel usually not, bike tips over
Swan neck / mixte curved or twin tubes only with an adapter
Wave / step-through no top tube, one low main tube no

Look at your bike from the side: is there a tube that runs roughly horizontally from the handlebar to the saddle? If not, you'll need one of the following alternatives.

These alternatives really work

  1. Vertically by the front wheel: A hook on the wall that you hang the front wheel on. The frame shape doesn't matter. However, the bike sticks out into the room by its full length, about 170–180 cm. For heavy bikes with a basket, lifting it up is hard work.
  2. Floor stand: The bike stays on the floor, so you don't have to lift anything. For heavy ladies' bikes and e-bikes in everyday use, it's often the most convenient solution, especially in a hallway or basement.
  3. Frame adapter bar: A bar clamped between handlebar and seatpost that creates an artificial top tube. These adapters are best known from rear-mounted car bike racks. With one, a step-through bike can go into a horizontal mount too. Make sure the adapter sits securely and is suitable for the weight of your bike.
  4. Ceiling lift: In a garage or basement, a pulley system can lift the bike up by its handlebar and saddle. More on this in the guide Hanging a bike from the ceiling.

Which solution suits which place?

In the hallway or living room, a simple floor stand is usually the most pleasant solution: the bike stands securely, nothing sticks far out into the room, and you don't have to lift the weight. In the basement, vertical hooks work well if there's enough depth. In the garage, the ceiling is also an option. If you ride the bike every day, it's best to choose the option that takes the least effort – otherwise the bike will eventually end up leaning against the wall again.

What to watch out for when hanging it

  • Remove the basket and bags: A full basket shifts the centre of gravity and makes the bike heavier.
  • Check the weight: Stand on the bathroom scales holding the bike and subtract your own weight. That way you know what load capacity you need.
  • Front mudguard: With vertical hooks, a long mudguard can get in the way. Check beforehand whether the hook fits between tyre and mudguard.
  • Hub gears and coaster brake: Usually no problem for hanging.
  • Check the wall: For heavy bikes, only drill into solid walls or into the studs. Use a cable detector.

Does a Bicycledudes mount fit my ladies' bike?

We want to be completely honest here: our wooden mounts aren't made for step-through and trapeze frames without a continuous top tube. With our mounts, the top tube rests horizontally – without it, the bike won't hold securely. In that case, we recommend a floor stand or a vertical hook.

One exception is the frame adapter bar: with it, a ladies' bike under around 20 kg can in principle also go into a horizontal mount. But it's a DIY solution that depends on the adapter and your bike. Feel free to send us a photo beforehand and we'll take a look together.

If your ladies' bike does have a straight top tube – a sporty trekking bike with a diamond frame, for example – our mounts such as Gustav or Clemens will fit. You'll find the dimensions in the Fitting Guide. A comparison of different types is provided in the guide Wood or metal. Our homepage gives you an overview of our oak and birch bike wall mount range.

Frequently asked questions

Can you hang a ladies' bike on the wall?

Yes, but usually not horizontally. Without a top tube, vertical hooks for the front wheel, floor stands or a frame adapter bar are suitable.

What is a frame adapter bar?

A bar fixed between the handlebar and seatpost that replaces a missing top tube. It's often used for bike racks on cars.

How do you hang a step-through bike in a flat?

In living spaces, a floor stand is often the nicer and more convenient solution. Hung vertically on the wall, the bike sticks far out into the room. More ideas in the guide Hanging a bike in your flat.

Is a ladies' e-bike too heavy to hang?

Often, yes. At typically 22–28 kg, a floor stand is usually the safer choice. More on this in Hanging an e-bike on the wall.
