Gifts for mountain bikers: cool and small ideas

In short: Mountain bikers love gifts that have to do with mud, crashes and the workshop: protective gear, cleaning accessories, tools for suspension forks and tubeless tyres, or a riding skills course. Small ideas start at about €10, a wooden wall mount from €65. Order from us by 14 December = delivery before Christmas.

What do you give a mountain biker?

Mountain biking is a gear-heavy sport. After every ride in the woods the bike is dirty, some tyre or shock is short of air, and now and then the rider ends up in the leaves. Good gifts start right there: they make cleaning, wrenching and falling more pleasant. Only buy parts like tyres, brakes or suspension fork upgrades if you know the exact specs. Otherwise a wrong axle standard or a different wheel size (27.5 or 29 inch) turns the gift into a return.

Gift ideas for mountain bikers by budget

Under €25

  • Bike cleaner and brush set – with a soft brush for the frame and a hard one for cassette and tyres.
  • Tubeless repair kit – plugs for sealing holes, weighs next to nothing and saves the ride.
  • Frame protection film – protects down tube and chainstay from stone chips.
  • A bag of good trail snacks – with an honest card: "For the break at the summit".

€25–75

  • Knee pads – lightweight pedal-friendly models get worn on every ride. Secretly find out the size beforehand.
  • Shock pump – for suspension fork and rear shock, with a fine scale.
  • Hip pack or small hydration pack – for tools, inner tube and jacket.
  • Waterproof trail gloves – for autumn and winter rides, around €30–50.

Over €75

  • Riding skills course – corners, jumps, steep descents. Even experienced riders get a lot out of it.
  • Bike park day pass including travel – as a joint trip in spring.
  • Repair stand – makes cleaning and wrenching at working height much more pleasant.
  • Wooden wall mount – such as Henry from €65 or Gustav from €119.

How do I discreetly find out what's missing?

The easiest way is through the cellar or garage. Check whether knee pads, pump and cleaner are already there and how worn they look. A worn-out glove with a hole at the thumb is a clear hint. If they ride with friends, you can also ask their riding buddies: they usually know exactly what got grumbled about after the last ride.

Cool or funny gifts for mountain bikers?

Funny gifts work if they're still useful. A few ideas:

  • A "mud emergency kit": cleaner, old toothbrush, microfibre cloth and a bar of chocolate in a bucket.
  • A photo book of the year's rides, including the best crashes (with their consent).
  • A hand-drawn map of their local trail as a poster.

It gets cool when the gift is an experience: a guided ride in a new region or a weekend with friends in the hills. More in the article Gifts for cyclists who already have everything.

Mountain bike on the wall: does a wooden mount fit?

Honest answer: usually yes, with two caveats. A hardtail or full-suspension bike typically weighs 12–16 kg, which our mounts can hold (Henry/Max approx. 18 kg, the other models approx. 20 kg). However, MTB handlebars are often 72–80 cm wide, so wider than the roughly 60 cm our mounts are designed for. The front wheel then turns towards the wall – the bike still hangs securely. A felt wheel strap for €10 keeps the front wheel steady. Our homepage gives you an overview of our oak and birch bike wall mount range.

Not suitable are e-mountain bikes over 20 kg and full-suspension bikes where the shock heavily interrupts the top tube. For e-MTBs, a floor stand or a metal mount is the better choice. More in the guide Mountain bike on the wall.

Checklist: does a wall mount suit the recipient's bike?

  • Is the top tube clear, without a shock or frame bag in the way?
  • Does the bike weigh less than about 20 kg (no e-MTB)?
  • Is the bike clean enough for indoors after a ride? Quick hose-down, wipe the tyres.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cool gift for mountain bikers?

A riding skills course, a day at a bike park or a repair stand for their own workshop. Experiences often stay in the memory longer than accessories.

What is a small gift for mountain bikers?

A tubeless repair kit, frame protection film, bike cleaner or a felt wheel strap for €10.

What size do MTB tyres and inner tubes need to be?

Usually 27.5 or 29 inch; the width is printed on the tyre sidewall. Anyone riding tubeless doesn't need inner tubes, but will appreciate sealant.

Can you hang a mountain bike with wide handlebars on the wall?

Yes. With handlebars over approx. 60 cm, the front wheel turns in, but the bike still hangs securely on the top tube.
